October means one thing in our house…We get excited about Halloween! On October 1st we crack out the cheesy kids Halloween CDs and of course our not so spooky Halloween books! So, this is what we’ll be reading in October:
Funny Bones – Janet and Allan Ahlberg
The Ahlbergs are definitely amongst my top 3 children’s authors, I love the poetic rhythm to their stories, child friendly humour and wonderful illustrations. I also love the fact that I read these books as a child and they are still so relevant today. Funny bones is the classic story of two skeletons and their dog who set out into the night to find somebody to scare, and their adventures along the way.
Room on the Broom – Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
Another of our favourite kid’s book teams. Donaldson and Scheffler create a kid friendly, witch themed adventure about a generous witch who allows too many animals to climb on her broom. A lovely story about generosity and friendship which also ticks all the Halloween boxes.
Spot’s Halloween – Eric Hill
Eric Hill’s lovable Spot the Dog is well known for his ‘first’ adventures, and this time it’s Halloween. The simple story and bold, colourful pictures makes this a great book for young toddlers.
One,two, Boo – Kristen L. Depken
A great counting book which has a different number of Halloween themed things on each page from 1-10. This is also a lift the flap book, which kids obviously adore. Again, great for younger children who are learning to count.
Peppa’s Pumpkin Party
If, like me, you have a Peppa Pig fan, then this is a great Halloween book. All about a Pumpkin Party at Peppa and George’s house, all your favourite characters dressed in spooky costumes and even a little surprise about Madame Gazelle! An instant hit with my two.
The Night Before Halloween – Natasha Wing
A spooky take on the classic Christmas poem, this book follows the same formula and rhythm, but with a Halloween theme. As the ghosts and ghouls spend the night before Halloween readying their Haunted House for trick or treaters to arrive.

Ooh, we’re excited for Halloween too! Love ‘Room on the Broom’. I loved ‘Funny Bones’ as a child and haven’t read it with Little M yet – you’ve inspired me to find that one again. We also like the ‘Duck and Goose’ books. There’s one called ‘Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin’ which is a good Halloween book for very little ones. x

Funny bones, god I remember that from when I was younger (I think!). We love Room on the Broom, it’s a favourite! #TheList
