The very best family Halloween Tradition for me, is picking our own Pumkins from the pumpkin patch. I was obviously delighted when I heard about a local pumpkin festival offering just that, I knew this would be popular, so I booked our tickets weeks ago!
Off we set on a freezing cold October morning, to the farm, about a 20 minute drive from our house. Despite the cold, spirits were high and Banana could hardly contain her excitement when we arrived!
The first thing included in the ticket price was a wonderful tractor trailer ride from the farm shop to the pumpkin field. They had made this extra kid friendly by decorating the trailer with Halloween paraphanaelia and having an onboard host ‘Mrs Pumpkin’ who was dressed in costume and read a the story of Spookly The Square Pumpkin on the way round. Banana enjoyed the story and Duckling loved bumping along on the tractor ride.
When we arrived at the pumpkin patch I encouraged the girls to run freely and pick the perfect pumpkin. Banana surprised me by picking a small, bright pumpkin with an extre long stalk. She liked the fact that she could carry it on her own without any help.
After finding the perfect pumpkins we hopped back on the tractor, back to the farm shop to do some carving. There was a carving workshop set up in a lovely marquee, again decorated seasonally and with hay bales for the smaller childten to stand on. Banana was determined to carve and design her pumpkin herself, so I allowed her plenty of independence and only helped with the most tricky carving bits. We used the proper pumpkin carvers which are surprisingly safe and easy for kids to use under supervision. We was very pleased with her finished product and I think the extra long stalk adds a lovely touch of individuality to her lantern.
As expected, we had a really awesome day picking pumpkins and Banana’s creation is happily lit on our mantelpiece, waiting for the big day!
